Educational Public Programs for February 2018

The Environmental Education Center has partnered with the national Let's Move! initiative to fight childhood obesity by encouraging participation in outdoor activities and promoting healthy eating. We have added some new programs as part of our Let's Move! series.

Let's Move

The North Shore Tour
(Adult)
If you love birding along the Jersey Shore, then join us for a day you will never forget! Depending on where the birds are, we might visit the Shark River estuary, the Manasquan River, Spring Lake, Wreck Pond, and/or Lake Como. All of these places are great for viewing thousands of winter waterfowl. Bring binoculars, lunch, and bundle up!
$50 per adult/$40 per senior

Tree House Gang let's move
(Ages 3-5)
Bring your little ones to the Environmental Education Center for fun science and nature programming. These two-and-a-half hour afternoon classes will enhance learning by spending up to two hours outside exploring, hands-on activities, meeting live animals, and learning by experimenting. Each month has a different theme. Please send a small snack with your child. Please dress for the weather. Please register for only the Tuesday session or the Thursday session per month. Both monthly sessions cover the same material on a weekly basis.
$65 for 4-day session per person

Swamp Kids let's move
(Ages 8-10)
Become a Swamp Kid! This program is designed to let the child's curiosity and passion guide their learning. Nature is the greatest teacher! Each week this outdoor afterschool series will focus on a different seasonal theme. Please be dressed for all kinds of weather and warm, and waterproof boots are a must.
$24 for 4-day session per person

Backyard Birds
(All Ages, 8 years and older with parent)
Whether you want to know more about your local bird species or are looking to get your foot in the door and begin your birdwatching career this is the program for you. The program will largely be presentation based as we talk about how to find, identify, and enjoy our little local avian friends. If the weather is accommodating we may do a short walk to find some of the species mentioned in the presentation. Pre-registration is required.

Is natural science a subject you find interesting? Do you like the outdoors? Is the Great Swamp a place you like to visit? If so, join us at the Environmental Education Center and contribute your talents to our fun and educational projects and special events. Pre-registration is required.

Sunday Forest Fitness
(Adult)
Join a weekly walking group and enhance your exercise regimen with Mother Nature! Improve your health, clear your mind, and enjoy nature as you traverse the level trails of Lord Stirling Park with a Naturalist as your guide. Leave cool, calm, and collected. Participants must be able to walk continuously at a moderate pace with occasional breaks. Bring a water bottle and a desire to leave your troubles behind. Comfortable, waterproof boots are a must in the swamp.
$20 for 4-day session per person

Feed the ones you love this Valentine's Day. Join a Naturalist to learn all about some of our fine feathered friends and what food they like to eat. With mom's or dad's help, you will be able to create a charming treat for your backyard friends.

KinderNats let's move
(Ages 5-7)
KinderNats is a program designed and geared for children who love being outdoors. This afterschool series will get them outside to study science and explore the natural world. These Junior Naturalists will be engaged through hiking, games, and activities. Each week will focus on a different seasonal theme. Please be dressed for all kinds of weather.
$12 for 2-day session per person

American Museum of Natural History
(Adult)
Join Environmental Education Center Naturalists on a day trip to New York City's world famous AMNH. Are you interested in seeing the prehistoric animals on the fourth floor, learning more about the indigenous peoples of the world, viewing the life size great blue whale in the Hall of Ocean Life or are you more interested in things that sparkle and twinkle in the Hall of Gems and Minerals? Visit the current special exhibition, take in a
planetarium show or visit the live Butterfly Conservatory. There is something of interest to everyone who visits this museum. Be prepared for a long day on your feet; good walking shoes are strongly recommended, bring money for lunch in their café.

Registration is accepted 9am-4:30pm daily.
The building is closed on Holidays.
Trails are open dawn to dusk daily but closed on Deer Management days as scheduled.
