Educational Public Programs for December 2018

Let's Move The Environmental Education Center has partnered with the national Let's Move! initiative to fight childhood obesity by encouraging participation in outdoor activities and promoting healthy eating. Those programs are listed with the Let's Move! logo by the program titles.

Candle Making
(All Ages, 8 years and older)
Candles are fun and relatively easy to make. They also make great gifts. Join the Naturalists for this enlightening class and make a few candles of your own to take home.
$10 per person

Sunday Forest Fitness
(Adult)
Join a weekend walking group and enhance your exercise regimen with Mother Nature! Improve your health, clear your mind, and enjoy nature as you traverse the level trails of Lord Stirling Park with a Naturalist as your guide. Leave cool, calm, and collected. Participants must be able to walk continuously at a moderate pace with occasional breaks. Bring a water bottle and a desire to leave your troubles behind. Comfortable, waterproof boots are a must in the swamp.
$25 for 5-day session per person

Holiday for the Birds

Come and learn which birds spend the holidays with us in New Jersey! We will go for a wintery walk on the trails looking and listening for our feathered friends. We will also make a special treat to help the birds survive the cold winter weather.

The Young Explorers Club
(Ages infant-5 with parent)
It is never too early to get little ones outdoors to experience the wonders of nature. This series will focus on developing their five senses through simple activities. Parents will share the excitement with their children during this special hour and return home with ideas to explore nature close to home.

KinderNats
(Ages 5-7)
KinderNats is a program designed and geared for children who love being outdoors. This afterschool series will get them outside to study science and explore the natural world. These Junior Naturalists will be engaged through games, activities, and much more! Each week will focus on a different seasonal theme. Please be dressed for all kinds of weather and waterproof boots are a must.
$18 for 3-day session per person

Tree House Gang
(Ages 3-5)
Bring your little ones to the Environmental Education Center for fun science and nature programming. These two-and-a-half hour afternoon classes will enhance learning by spending up to two hours outside exploring, hands-on activities, meeting live animals, and learning by experimenting. Each month has a different theme. Please provide a small snack for your child. Comfortable, waterproof boots are a must in the swamp.
$50 for 3-day session per person

New York Botanical Garden Holiday Train Show
(Adult)
New York Botanical Garden's annual Holiday Train Show is our final Garden Discovery trip of the year. Each November the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory is transformed for a few weeks for this well-loved event. Join us and be captivated by model trains zipping around famous New York landmarks and marvel at the creativity of buildings made of plant parts such as nuts, bark, seed pods, and leaves.

Birding Identification Workshops: Ducks

This program will be all about the wide array of ducks we have in New Jersey during winter. We will learn how to identify drakes and hens of each species and break the species into easy-to-remember groups. The workshop is held indoors and is the same program on both listed dates. Learn some birding basics as we collect data for the Environmental Education Center and the Audubon Society on the annual Christmas Bird Count. Fantastic waterfowl, amazing shorebirds, spectacular raptors and beautiful songbirds are only a sample of what may be found residing at Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced birder, come and enjoy the sights and sounds of "Brig"! Bring binoculars, lunch, and money (cash please) for dinner at Oyster Creek Inn.
